I am a newbie to social media marketing. I understand what social media is, but how to best utilize it in marketing is still foreign to me. I figured that I am not alone. There are probably many others out there that would like to learn more about social media and how they can apply these techniques in promoting their visibility in business.
So with that, over the next several posts, I’ll share with you tidbits of what I learn by reading Paul Gillin’s book, “Secrets of Social Media Marketing: How to Use Online Conversations and Customer Communities to Turbo-Charge Your Business!”
Tidbit #1 Social Media Defined
In order to understand how to apply social media to your business, you need to know what it is, right? According to Wikipedia, “Social media are primarily Internet and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings….This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and “building” of shared meaning among communities, as people share their stories and experiences.”
Bottom line is social media is all about people sharing their opinions. These opinions can be expressed in the form of words, videos, pictures and audio. Social media is the “soap box” where anyone can stand and talk about things they care about – uncensored.
This interaction – between company and consumer – is what makes social media so darn powerful. Businesses who utilize social media as part of their overall marketing plan also gain access to their potential customers/buyers/clients. This prompt feedback allows for businesses to adjust their messages and product development to meet the true needs of their audience. How amazing is that?
My next blog entry will reveal three common social media hang-ups.
